Carbon Footprint Under the Microscope: From Charger to Airplane

Have you ever wondered what has a greater impact on the planet: plugging your smartphone into the charger every day, driving to the store for a quick shopping trip, or taking a weekend flight to the other side of Europe?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is invisible, making it extremely difficult to grasp the true scale of our personal emissions. To make this easier, we compared four very different activities and calculated their carbon footprints—from small, everyday actions to large-scale industrial production.

The Biggest Surprise? Charging Your Phone vs. the Rest of the World

Most of us feel a slight sense of guilt about leaving our phone plugged in overnight. Yet the hard math of climate emissions reveals a surprising fact: to generate the same amount of CO2 as a single flight to London, you would have to charge your phone every day for more than… 70 years!

Of course, saving energy at home still matters, but transportation choices and large-scale plastic consumption are the real drivers of our carbon footprint.

How Did We Calculate It?

All carbon dioxide (CO2) emission values were calculated using official emission factors and carbon footprint standards.

  • PET Bottles (500 kg CO2): Calculated using an average weight of 25 g for a 0.5 L PET bottle (500 kg of plastic in total) and an emission factor of 2.5 kg CO2 per kg of virgin PET resin, based on the EcoHedge Polymer Carbon Data database.
  • Passenger Car (10 kg CO2): Based on an average real-world fleet emission factor of approximately 150 g CO2/km, using emissions data published by the European Environment Agency (EEA).
  • Smartphone (50 kg CO2): Assumes a daily electricity consumption of 14 Wh and an electricity emission factor for Poland of approximately 0.553 kg CO2/kWh, as published by KOBiZE.
  • Air Travel (200 kg CO2): Based on a flight distance of 1,450 km and a short-haul flight emission factor of approximately 130–140 g CO2 per passenger-kilometer, according to the ICAO Carbon Emissions Calculator.
